Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) are four‑digit codes assigned by card networks (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) to classify stores by the primary goods or services they offer. You use MCCs to control where cards can (or can’t) be used - but note that these restrictions apply to the store’s category, not the individual items you purchase.
- How it works:
- Every merchant is assigned one MCC based on their business classification.
- When you block or allow an MCC, you’re effectively blocking or allowing all transactions at that type of merchant.
- Example: If you permit MCC 5541 (Gas Stations), cardholders can pay for fuel, snacks, or coffee at a gas station - even though “snacks” are a different category in a grocery‑store MCC.
Sometimes networks mis-assign MCCs. A merchant might process under the wrong code, causing unexpected declines or approvals.
